A project that is in progress
I’m creating a video installation that will look at the phrase “Thank you for your service” (TYFYS) from several points of view. I’ll share what TYFYS means and how I feel about it. I’ll have other veterans share their thoughts and feelings when people say TYFYS. We’ll offer alternative things to say to a veteran other than TYFYS. I’ll use PowerPoint-like text to reinforce different ideas and thoughts in addition to talking head videos.
Thank you to the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture for a 2025 Artist Grant that made this project possible.

This is the first of weekly updates on my latest project, Thank You For Your Service. This project aims to create a meaningful dialogue between veterans and civilians, building mutual understanding regarding the phrase Thank You For Your Service. While civilians often express gratitude to veterans by saying, “Thank you for your service,” this phrase, though well-intentioned, has become hollow and, in some cases, off-putting. This piece will offer insights into how veterans perceive this common expression and suggest more meaningful ways to engage. Doing so encourages viewers to reflect on their words and actions when expressing gratitude to those who have served.
